Nutritious sugarcane bagasse

Bagasse is the fibrous material that remains after the sugar has been extracted from the cane by crushing or diffusion. Sugarcane bagasse is one of the world’s most abundant agricultural residues, and in an Indian context, ∼ 900 lakh tonnes per annum are produced. Even after using it to generate electricity, 45 lakh tonnes of it is saved. In such a situation, the National Sugar Institute (NSI) has prepared a healthy biscuit from sugarcane bagasse and jaggery. This biscuit is rich in vitamins and calcium, and the bagasse fiber makes it more nutritious. Due to the presence of vitamin ‘C’ and other nutritious elements, it is also helpful in increasing immunity. Due to the various flavors, this biscuit will be liked by children of all ages. The institute experts have patented the technology. Now, this technology is ready to be given to a company so that the biscuit can come in the market this year.

What is bagasse?

Bagasse is another by-product of the sugar industry. It is the heterogeneous fibrous residue that remains after sugarcane stalks are crushed for sugar extraction. The solid material left after extracting the juice by crushing (crushing) sugarcane is called bagasse. In the beginning, people did not know about its use, but nowadays, it is used as a renewable source for making biofuel or paper. It is also used as a material for house construction. Tableware products are also made from sugarcane bagasse, which is completely biodegradable.

After crushing sugarcane in sugar mills in the country, its bagasse is saved. Some sugar mills use it as fuel. The experts of NSI have developed this technology to bring additional benefits to the farmers and sugar factories.
